Before bringing your new Parakeet home, you will want to purchase some supplies. A cage, a cover for the cage (optional), food and water dishes, a cuttle bone, parakeet food and a bird toy or two are all things you will need. Setting up the cage is easy. Place all the perches where you want them then line the bottom of the cage with either cage liners or regular newspaper. Make sure to place the cage away from drafts. Keeping the cage clean is very important. A dirty cage is a breeding ground for bacteria. It's always best to change the bottom liner on the cage every day, and to clean the entire cage at least once a week.

Parakeets are very social birds and need attention every day. At first the parakeet will be nervous and will be afraid. Take things slowly. After a few weeks your bird will be more comfortable with you and his new home. For exercise you can let your parakeet fly around the house. Before doing this you will need to make sure that there are no dangers. Make sure curtains are closed because parakeets, just like other birds will naturally fly for the outdoors and will not see that there is glass blocking their way. Make sure that all ceiling fans are off, and that there are no hot items on the stove. Close the lid on toilets too. Birds can fall in and drown.

When buying toys for your bird, avoid mirrors and toys that look like other birds. If given these kinds of toys, the bird will bond with them instead of bonding with you.

Parakeets need food and fresh water. The best foods for your bird are the ones especially formulated for a parakeet's nutritional need. Make sure the seed is of high quality because some seeds that are intended for parakeets really aren't nutritious enough for them and as a result some parakeets die young from malnutrition.

It's important to a parakeet's health to keep them warm and away from drafts. Parakeets need their cage covered at night to prevent them from catching a chill. To cover their cage you can either use a custom made cage cover, or you can use a large towel. Remember to remove the cover in the morning.
